While volunteering in Uganda, I spent time at the People's Concerned Children's Project (PCCP) in the Kabalagala Slum.
The school is the children's greatest opportunity to lift themselves out of poverty. The teacher and founder of PCCP is Moshin Juma. He was once a member of the slum, and at the age of 18 he taught himself how to read and write. He received an education and has dedicated his life back to the slum and most importantly, the children.
In order to fund this project, the children make hand made bracelets out of recycled materials. I told Moshin that as I returned to the United States, I knew my friends would want to find a way to help.
And so I present to you, a bracelet that comes straight from the Pearl of Africa. Each bracelet costs $10. They are extremely durable and sustainable. With each bracelet, you will receive via email a picture and bio of one of the bracelet makers themselves: the children from PCCP.
The money from this batch of bracelets (approximately 100) will provide 7 computers in the school. Moshin believes that technology is an extremely useful tool to know how to use to life oneself out of poverty, as many jobs require experience in technology.
